dach July 5, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Scuba diving has always been known as a human task but it has been taken up by a dog in Russia. This unusual experiment has been carried out by the Diver Training Center at Vladivostok Maritime College for its 15th anniversary.

Sergei Gorbunov, the director of the center, provided his pet dachshund, Boniface for the experiment. A striped diving suit was made for the pet by the dog-motivated divers. A square mask was made out of Plexiglas keeping in mind that the dog may want to breathe under water.

During the diving, the dog fondly called ‘Bonnie’ used just one air bottle, which was attached to its belly. It allowed the dog to swim under the water as well. The experimentalists said that Boniface felt good at the time of the fur-raising effort.

It will be too premature for the dog to go offshore diving. First of all, it should go for a dive in a special swimming pool before moving to an open sea. The staff at the center will be training the diver dog to participate in the All-Russian Underwater Hunting Tournament, which is set to take place in September.

The dog has a different outlook while underwater. Gobunov said, “I don’t think he faces any stress while diving .”

It will be really interesting to see when the dog performs the actual task of diving under the sea. So, get ready for this September, when a canine gets to perform underwater scuba diving.
