Roman Polanski arrested Zurich, Oct 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Noted Director Roman Polanski tried his best to be released from jail, but his defense team failed to secure a safe passage for him. He might be extradited to the United States now, following the bail plea rejection. The court said that he was a flight risk, and will remain in Swiss prison for the time being.

The Swiss Justice Ministry has confirmed that Polanski’s own appeal to be released from prison pending his possible extradition to the United States has failed.

A spokesman for the Ministry, Folco Galli, said the Government believed the 76-year-old film director might flee even if conditions were imposed.

That criminal court will decide on the legality of the American request for Polanski’s apprehension, Swiss Justice Ministry spokesman Guido Balmer told The Associated Press on Tuesday. He noted that the Justice Ministry and Polanski could later seek to overturn any decision at the Federal Tribunal, Switzerland’s highest court.

It may be recalled that Roman was arrested while he was going to Switzerland to collect an award, over a crime that he committed in the US in 1978. He had unlawful sex with a teenager in 1978, who is now a mother of four.
