Los Angeles, Feb 29 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Rodney King accepted a plea bargain that saw him avoid going to jail for reckless driving. He pleaded guilty and was given 20 days home detention sentence. King, whose beating in 1991 by officers led to the Los Angeles riots, had admitted that he suffers from alcohol abuse.

The judge further ordered that King should undergo a mandatory nine-month rehab program to help him overcome his alcohol addiction. His movements will be monitored with an ankle bracelet. He has also been fined $500 for the offense.

King was arrested last July on suspicion that he was driving under influence. John Hall from the Riverside County district attorney said that, “He was driving while intoxicated and found to have a measurable amount of alcohol in his system. However, we believe we would have been unable to prove beyond a reasonable doubt to a jury that his blood-alcohol content was 0.08 percent or higher.”

A video of King being beaten by two officers in 1991 sparked the 1992 Los Angeles riot which resulted in the death of more than 55 people. Properties worth about $1 billion were destroyed and over 2,000 people were left injured following the riots. The two officers were later found guilty of civil rights charges.
