Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony 2009 Kicks Off Christmas Season

treeDec. 03, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Rockefeller tree lighting ceremony of 2009 took place on Dec. 02. The 76 feet tall Christmas tree was lit marking the first day of the month long ceremony that will end on January 7, 2010. The tree, that is located in midtown New York, will be lit every day from 5:30 a.m to 11:30 p.m.. It will be lit 24 hours on the day of Christmas and and from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on New Years Eve.

The lighting of the tree is an annual ceremony that marks the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year. The tree, a Norway Spruce, is brought from Easton. It is almost 76 feet tall and 40 feet wide and weighs over 10 tonnes. It is decorated with 30,000 multicolored lights and at the top, a Swarovski crystal star is placed that sparkles with the energy of 700 bulbs that have the capacity to be lit for a very long time. It is one of the biggest events of the city and has not yet lost any of the charm and appeal since it began in the year 1933.

This year, celebrities were present to perform and soak in the festive spirit of the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Shakira, who was present along with the likes of Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin, Michael Buble, The Roots among others, was ecstatic. She confessed that it was the first time that she was experiencing this ceremony. The other celebrities who performed in the ceremony that was aired in an hour long program on NBC were Rod Stewart, Jo Dee Messina, Rob Thomas, The Muppets and Barry Manilow. The mayor of New York City was there to inaugurate the ceremony.
