However, if the swimmer is in deep waters a lifeguard may not reach there fast and he might drown. This is where Emily, a new remote controlled robot lifesaver comes into the picture. The Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard or Emily has been designed to save the lives of people drowning in sea and it can reach a person in water at least six times faster than a professional lifeguard. It is battery powered and can cover a distance of 130 kilometers after a recharge which is pretty impressive. It has been invented by a company named Hydronalix.

As of now, Emily needs to be operated from land by a person but the company says that in the next year fully automated versions will be sold in the market. The upcoming model will have more advanced capabilities. However, the available version of Emily cannot match a human lifeguard but still it can be used along with human guards. However, it cannot save the life of a swimmer who has lost consciousness. The lifeguard at land will have to maneuver the device rightly to save the life of the victim in water.

Despite its limitations Emily is a promising device that can increase the efficiency of the professional lifesavers. Hydronalix has said that each device will have a price tag of $3,500. The device also has a speaker and camera on-board so that the lifesavers can communicate with the victims and give them directions for reaching land safely.
