Rights activist Cornel West arrested
October 17th, 2011 - 10:47 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Oct 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Rights activist and critic Dr. Cornel West has been arrested. He was standing in front of the US Supreme Court where a memorial for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was going.
Before being picked up, Cornel told the crowd that, “We will not allow this day of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial to go without somebody going to jail.”
Cornel who is a Democrat Socialist recently criticized President Barack Obama and joined the protesters at Wall Street to fight what they call corporate greed. During the 2008 race that got Obama to the White House, Cornel publicly gave his support to the president and spoke at some of his campaigns. However he publicly denounced his support for the president during an interview in April this year when he said Obama has become the “black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and a black puppet of corporate plutocrats. And now he has become head of the American killing machine and is proud of it.”
He also criticized the president when he was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 saying the Obama was a “war president.”
He is a graduate of the Harvard University. In the 1960s, he was actively involved in the struggle for equal rights in the United States.
