PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND (BNO NEWS) – A resident of South Kingstown, Rhode Island was sentenced on Thursday to five years in probation, the first five to be served on home confinement, for filing false income tax returns, U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha announced.

David Christensen, 58, admitted to have under-reported the income from his business by more than $244,000. As result he under-paid his income tax by a total of $70,172 for the tax years 2003 and 2004.

The defendant concealed his income by depositing a substantial portion into an account of his wife. A smaller portion was deposited in to the business account.

Christensen’s sentence would usually include a term of imprisonment but home confinement was chosen due to the fact that the defendant cooperated with the government very early on in admitting his guilt.

“Cases like this are a strong reminder, particularly at the height of tax filing season, that taxpayers who intentionally withhold information and tax payment from the I.R.S. will be held accountable for their actions,” U.S. Attorney Neronha said.
