Rescued Chilean Miner Edison Pena Finishes New York City Marathon

Edison PenaNov 8, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Chilean miner Edison Pena ran the New York City Marathon on Sunday and all eyes were at the rescued miner. It was not that easy for him to beat his own goal and complete the Marathon through New York City’s five borough’s in six hours. When asked, he said that he wanted to show people that “it can be done” and hence he took part in the marathon as one of the 43,000 participants in the foot race.

The rescued Chilean miner wore dark glasses, a knee support owing to injury in the mine and he was carrying a Chilean flag. Even the organizers played his favorite Elvis Presley music and the crowd cheered for him to encourage him. Mary Wittenberg, the race director of New York City Marathon said that the “runners” and people of New York want to celebrate Edison Pena for his confidence and zeal. Edison Pena and his wife reportedly traveled all the way to0 New York at the expense of New York Road Runner’s Club. However, before the big event Edison Pena said that he never thought he would make it to the “marathon”.

Edison Pena seemed apprehensive before the event and said that he hopes the “press” would not “destroy” him he can not finish the race owing to his knee injury. He said that he decided to take part in the event to “feel the emotion” and motivate others. After successfully finishing the race the Chilean miner said that he was running to be an “active” participant in his “own salvation”. About the media hype he said that people say that the rescued Chilean miners are “heroes” but according to him its the “destiny” that made them survive all the ordeals.
