Report says that 911 firefighters are getting cancer at a faster rate
April 4th, 2011 - 9:05 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, April 4 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A government-sponsored report which is expected to be released just in time to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the most devastating attacks on the US soil is expected to detail the ‘unusual’ rise in cancer cases among the firefighters who worked at the Ground Zero after the attacks. Several firefighters were at the Ground Zero to recover dead bodies and survivors from the rubbles after the attack.
Sources close to report say there has been ‘significant’ rise in the number of various cancers in the firefighters who worked at the post-attack recovery efforts. The report is not yet official so none of the officers spoke on authority.
The Fire Department’s chief medical officer, Dr. David Prezant, was quoted by various news outlets saying that cancer cases in “all ranks” of the New York Fire Department who worked at the Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks have gone “up significantly.”
Leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma, esophageal, prostate and thyroid cancers have all gone up in the firefighters who worked at the Ground Zero.
The New York Post quoted a source close to the report as saying that, “The only conclusion that could have been reached was that there was an increase in the cancer rate for firefighters after 9/11.”
