Report: Kyrgyzstan governor says President Bakiyev resigns amid deadly coup
April 8th, 2010 - 3:19 pm ICT by BNO NewsBISHKEK (BNO NEWS) — A Kyrgyzstan governor on Thursday said that President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has resigned amid a deadly coup by opposition parties, a news report said.
The Interfax news agency cited the Governor of Jalal-Abad Province, in southwestern Kyrgyzstan, as saying that Bakiyev resigned. It provided no further details.
Opposition-nominated premier Roza Otunbayeva earlier said the opposition is now in control of four out of seven regions in the Central Asian country. Otunbayeva said President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has not given up his post and is trying to organize resistance in the country’s south where he has support and a residence.
Widespread riots on Wednesday, mainly in the country’s capital, left at least 68 people dead. Nearly 530 others sought medical attention, according to Damira Niyazlieva, the newly appointed Health Minister.
