Report: Al-Qaeda terrorists planning to attack the German parliament
November 21st, 2010 - 1:36 am ICT by BNO NewsBERLIN (BNO NEWS) — Al-Qaeda and several associated groups had planned to attack the German parliament in a Mumbai-style terror attack next year, according to a local media report on Saturday.
According to Spiegel magazine, in an article to be published in full on Monday, authorities were alerted by a Jihadist about the plans. As a result, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere warned last week about possible upcoming terrorist attacks.
“The indications are concrete, but it can’t be a provocation and it can’t push us to completely change our public life,” de Maiziere said in Berlin last week, while announcing that authorities would increase security at locations such as airports and railway stations.
Spiegel magazine on Saturday said the source spoke several times by telephone with German police from outside the country, trying to get help for his family in exchange for information.
The Jihadist said the terror cell consisted of six militants, two who have already arrived in Berlin and four who are ready to travel to the country. He identified three of them as a German, a Turk and a northern African.
The terror cell had planned to attack the Reichstag parliament building in February or March of 2011, shooting people and taking hostages. The magazine also said the FBI warned Germany of another group of attackers that are or were due to arrive in Germany on November 22.
