Jan 17, (THAINDIAN NEWS) In the wake of the devastating earthquake that the island nation of Haiti experienced last week, support and relief measures are pouring in from across the world. Among the humanitarian organizations that are taking the initiative to cater to the immediate needs of the disaster hit victims, Red Cross is playing a pivotal role in providing an impetus to the relief measures that are being undertaken.
In a bid to raise the amount of donations, American Red Cross has been urging cell phone users to message the word “Haiti” to 90999, which would result in the donation of $10 to the relief measures in the Caribbean island. The initiative has turned out to be immensely successful as the humanitarian organization has already grossed over $9 million. Apart from this venture, Red Cross has also been instrumental in distributing basic amenities such as food, water and other basic supplies to the victims who have been rendered homeless and are thriving in relief camps following the catastrophe.
Meanwhile, David Meltzer, the organization’s senior vice president for international services has added that the support that the Americans have shown for the victims of the natural disaster is finally reaching out to the people of the impoverished island nation.
At the same time, officials of the organization have implied that it remains unclear as of now how much relief measures would be required to bring the devastated island back to track. The magnitude of the disaster reveals that it might take years to rehabilitate the earthquake hit victims.
The Caribbean island of Haiti was rocked by a mammoth earthquake last Tuesday that killed thousands and left around 300,000 people homeless.
