Rebekah Brooks arrested
July 18th, 2011 - 11:07 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, July 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The phone hacking scandal that rocked United Kingdom took another dimension on Sunday when the former head of News International Rebekah Brooks was arrested. Investigators questioned Brooks for nine hours before she was released on bail.
The lawyer of Brooks defended his client on Monday arguing that the police arrested Brooks without any evidence showing that she was part of the phone hacking scandal. On Monday, it was announced that Brooks is one of the people expected to appear before the British Parliament to answer questions on the phone hacking scandal. She is also set to appear before the sports committee of the country’s Parliament on Tuesday.
Her lawyer Stephen Parkinson maintains that Brooks is not guilty of any of the accusations being thrown at her. In a statement, “The position of Rebekah Brooks can be simply stated: She is not guilty of any criminal offence. The position of the Metropolitan police is less easy to understand. Despite arresting her yesterday and conducting an interview process lasting nine hours, they put no allegations to her, and showed her no documents connecting her with any crime.”
Brooks resigned as the chief executive officer of News International recently. The phone hacking scandal has already resulted in the closure of one of UK’s oldest and best selling newspapers News of the World.
