New York, Oct 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A 71-year-old retired Port Authority worker says he is going to rename Rat Island after he purchased the 2-and-a-half acre property. The island previously belonged to Edmund Brennen and it was offered for sale during an auction.

There were eight bidders including Alex Schibli who eventually outbid the others. He purchased the island for $160,000 and says he has dreamt of owning it for years. Alex lives near the island and he can see it from his window.

During an interview, Alex said he has been looking at the island from his window on several occasions. He revealed that he has also kayak to the island on several occasions with his wife. By purchasing the property, Alex has the right to put up any structure on it but he says he will leave it as it is.

Even when he was not the owner, Alex was keeping the island clean by picking the garbage that party goers left behind.

He said that, “I noticed people were having parties and get-togethers out there. They would leave beer bottles and other garbage. I took it upon myself to clean up after them. I care about the island so much.”

Alex plans to change the name of the island saying one of the names he is considering is that of his 4-year-old granddaughter Malina.
