Racism Charges On Valley Swimming Club

Accusations of racial discrimination has been faced by the Huntington Valley Swimming Club in Philadelphia recently after it was revealed that African American kids there have received prejudicial remarks from the club members.
The incident happened on June 29 when some 7th grader kindergarten children appeared at the pool, which was a part of their Creative Steps, Inc. day camp. The swimming club has been paid $1900 by the Day camp authorities to allow the campers to the pool. The parents of the 60 children campers reported that their children felt quite “unwelcomed” when they heard remarks like “get lost” from the pool attendants. The pool was then filled with white kids.
Executive director of the Creative Steps, Aleathea Wright, said that three children coming up to her reported that they have heard club members saying “what African Americans were doing there in the Valley club.” Wright was also quoted saying, “The other members were taking their children out while our children were there swimming.” The Pool attendants seeing this informed the black children to leave the pool immediately.
The situation took a worse turn when the parents of the 60 campers overheard racist comments from the parents of the white children saying, “What are all these black kids doing here?” The parents also fear that their kids may get harmed by the black children.
According to the latest reports, attempts to contact the club president and the other club officers have been futile. Wright has reported that the club without citing any reason have refunded the membership fees of $1950 through check.

To the little children who happened to have had the mispleasure of experiencing this cold hearted discrimination, I implore you to keep your head held high and be proud of yourselves. Do not let the ignorance and the smallmindedness of a few people cloud your view of all people. Be proud of who you are and keep being respectful young men and women. And lastly, pray for those folks who are confused and misguided by ignorance. God bless you all.

I am unclear as to whether this was discrimination on the part of the Valley Swim Club, or rude, unfeeling, and ignorant comments from Club members. Neither is acceptable, but if the organization has a good record of non-discrimination then it seems a shame (to say nothing of unfair) to blame the Club for the comments of individual members. I can picture the scenario - excited children who do normally not have access to posh swimming facilities may have been LOUD! It doesn’t seem that the Swin Club managed this very well: the member families should have been informed ahead of time that there would be groups paying to use the facilities.

Akron police say they aren’t ready to call it a hate crime or a gang initiation.
But to Marty Marshall, his wife and two kids, it seems pretty clear.
It came after a family night of celebrating America and freedom with a fireworks show at Firestone Stadium. Marshall, his family and two friends were gathered outside a friend’s home in South Akron.
Out of nowhere, the six were attacked by dozens of teenage boys, who shouted ”This is our world” and ”This is a black world” as they confronted Marshall and his family.
The Marshalls, who are white, say the crowd of teens who attacked them and two friends June 27 on Girard Street numbered close to 50. The teens were all black.
