Puerto Rico Experiences 5.7 Magnitude Earthquake

prteinSan Juan, Puerto Rico, May 16, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Caribbean island of Puerto Rico has been hit by an earthquake during early Sunday morning, according to latest reports. The United States Geological Survey has revealed that the magnitude of the earthquake has been measured to be 5.7 in Richter scale. No reports about any loss of life and other damages has not been available at the moment.

As per the reports that have surfaced, the Caribbean island experienced the earthquake around 1:16 a.m local time at an estimated depth of 68 miles. The epicenter of the earthquake is reported to be at distance of four miles from the Espino which is situated at the western part of the island and around 63 miles away from the capital city of San Juan. Large number of people are reported to have felt the earthquake in the area on early Sunday morning. Despite the fact that the magnitude of the quake was recorded to be more than 5, no immediate tsunami warning was issued by the officials. However, West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has revealed that underwater landslides might result in local tsunamis along the coastal regions which are located near the epicenter of the earthquake.

Meanwhile, it has also been reported that although certain parts of Puerto Rico experienced power cuts after the earthquake rattled the island, no injuries of other damages has been reported from any region till now. A Municipal Hospital situated in the city of Cayey reported to have treated a patient who was suffering from anxiety owing to the earthquake but no casualties were reported.
