August 15th, 2011 - 7:16 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington, 15 Aug (THAINDIAN NEWS) The hacking group Anonymous has hit Bay Area Rapid Transit for disrupting the cellular service at a subway in San Francisco. BART announced that they had to take the measure to ensure the safety of their passengers. Activists were planning to have protests in the subway system but BART used the disruption of cellular service to halt it.
The incident got many people protesting their displeasure and Anonymous hit with breaking the website of the company. The hacking group exposed customer details like passwords, e-mails and phone numbers along with names. The information belonged to BART customers who signed up for the alert service of the company.
A spokesperson of BART announced that, “We’re going to take steps to make sure our customers are safe. The interruption of cell phone service was done Thursday to prevent what could have been a dangerous situation. It’s one of the tactics we have at our disposal. We may use it; we may not. And I’m not sure we would necessarily let anyone know in advance either way.”
In a statement issued shortly after going public with the details on the company’s website, Anonymous said they decided to punish BART among other things for the killings of two people. The group said the killing was “unacceptable” because the two were not armed and did not shoot at the police.
