Nov 2, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Despite all the support and campaign, recent survey shows that Proposition 19 which would legalize marijuana has lost popularity in past month. Proposition 19’s fate will be decided today after the California citizens vote in favor or against it in the statewide ballot. Proposition 19 legalizes marijuana-related activities and also gives local government a platform to regulate, permit or impose taxes on all marijuana related issues. If Proposition 19 takes effect, then it would allow people aged 21 or more than that to possess up to one ounce of marijuana and at the same time, it would give the citizens a permission to grow up to 25 square feet of marijuana plants.
However, recent survey has showed that Proposition 19 has been supported by 42% voters and opposed by 49% and the proposition has been opposed by many Latin American countries as well. A reputed media source reported that the countries have maintained in their statements that United States should not stop legalizing it in other countries and at the same time promote and “authorize the legalization” of marijuana consumption and legalization in its own country. While speaking about Proposition 19, one of its supporters Ethan Nadelmann, the Drug Policy Alliance chief said that legalizing marijuana will help California in “leading” political sphere of authority in the world in terms of “marijuana”.
On one hand, there are many supporters of marijuana legalizations and on the other, it has been opposed by many. Mark DiCamillo, one of the pollster who recently surveyed people’s response regarding Proposition 19 told a reputed media source that he feels “voters” are “toying” with the whole thing. Ethan Nadelmann said that the public opinion makes him feel “pessimistic” and if Proposition 19 is rejected then it would be because some people who support legalizing marijuana are unsure about the government’s response.
