June 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Monaco’s Prince Albert recently announced his engagement to Charlene Wittstock, who is a former Olympic Swimming competitor for South Africa’s team. Miss Wittstock soon become the first crown princess which the wealthy area has had since the death of the American princess, Grace Kelly in 1982.

The announcement for “His Serene Highness” who is 52, to wed Wittstock, who is 32, came from the royal palace on Wednesday. Aside from being an Olympic swimmer, Miss Wittstock also worked as a teacher before she moved to Monaco. No wedding plans were announced as of yet, and protocol requires that at least six months pass between the announcement of an engagement and the wedding date, among royal couples.

The two met in 2000 when Wittstock was in Monaco for a swimming competition, and she has lived in Monaco since 2006. It is set to be the first wedding for a reigning prince since Grace Kelley was wed to Albert’s father, Prince Rainier III. When Princess Grace was killed in a car accident in 1982, the family was cast into a time of tragedy. Albert took over the throne after his father died in 2005. He has two illegitimate children, but neither of them can inherit the throne since they were born out of wedlock. If he never produces an heir, one of his sisters sons will take the throne.
