Lynette Alice “Squeaky” Fromme, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for a 1975 assassination attempt on US president Gerald Ford, was today released from a federal prison medical center in Carswell, Texas.

A devout follower of murderer Charles Manson, Fromme, now aged 60, was released after serving 34-years in jail for pointing a gun at the former US president on Sept 6, 1975 in Sacramento, California.

Though there was no round chambered in the weapon, four bullets were in the gun’s magazine clip.

Fromme has been eligible for parole since 1985, but has repeatedly waived hearings in order to show her dedication to the Manson cause.

The convicted felon was granted parole 2008 under a US law that makes parole mandatory after serving 30 years of a life sentence, but had to serve additional time for a prison escape in 1987 when she tried to visit a reportedly ill Manson.

Since Fromme’s conviction federal laws have changed and those convicted of presidential assassination, or attempted assassination, are no longer eligible for parole.

However, under laws in place at the time of her conviction she received a 54 day reduction to her original sentence for every year and one day served.

Prison officials have declined to comment on the conditions of her parole, or whether she maintains contact with Manson, who remains an inmate at Corcoran State Prison.
