WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — U.S. President Barack Obama will travel to the Louisiana Gulf Coast on Friday to assess the latest efforts to counter the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the White House announced on Tuesday.

The Obama administration has mobilized one of the largest responses to a catastrophic event in history, with more than 1,200 vessels in the region and more than 22,000 people, including many of the brightest scientific minds from both the public and private sector, the White House added.

Obama will travel to Louisiana from Chicago, Illinois where the First Family will be spending the Memorial Day weekend.

Earlier this month, Obama also went to the Gulf Coast where he met with local officials and fishermen to discuss the oil spill response. He also toured the coast by helicopter.

The April 20 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig - off of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico - killed 11 people and injured 17 others. The platform later sank, causing one of the worst environmental disasters in modern history.

The drilling rig continues to spill thousands of barrels a day into the ocean.
