President Obama orders investigation following failed terror attack
December 30th, 2009 - 12:55 pm ICT by BNO News ( Leave a comment )WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — President Obama on Sunday ordered an immediate review of aviation screening technology and its terrorism watchlisting system, the White House said on Tuesday.
The White House released two presidential memorandums in which President Obama detailed on the purpose of the reviews.
One of the reviews is to gather an inventory of all intelligence information within the U.S. government regarding the failed terror attack onboard Northwest flight 253. “In addition, a written account of how any such intelligence or other information was handled, shared, and acted upon within individual departments and agencies and what intelligence or other information was shared with others,” President Obama said in the order.
Obama is also requesting a written account of the standards and processes for nominating, reviewing, and approving or denying individuals for placement on the terrorist watchlist, including a summary of how those standards and processes have been developed, or have been revised, since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
The second review will be led by the Department of Homeland Security to make a report on the current aviation screening technology. The Department of Homeland Security, Obama said, will also work with other departments and agencies such as the Department of Energy and the National Laboratories.
“All aspects of aviation screening technology and procedures regarding domestic and international air travel should be considered as part of this review,” Obama wrote.
Obama said both reviews should be conducted in a manner that does not interfere with the ongoing criminal investigation and prosecution of any individuals involved in the attempted terrorist attack of last Friday. The President requested both reports to be finished by December 31st.
“A preliminary report, including recommendations for strengthening aviation screening technology and procedures and outlining how the Department of Homeland Security plans to proceed, shall be provided to the White House Staff Secretary by December 31, 2009,” he said. The White House plans to provide follow-up direction based on those two reports.
