WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) – President Barack Obama on Saturday announced his decision to nominate Lt. General James Clapper to be the new Director of National Intelligence.

Obama made the announcement during a press conference in the Rose Garden, saying Clapper is “one of our nation’s most experienced and respected intelligence professionals.” He said Clapper is ‘one of those’ who will tell leaders what they need to know, even if it might not be what they want to hear.

If confirmed by the U.S. Congress, Clapper - who is a retired Lieutenant General in the U.S. Air Force and currently serves as the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence - would replace Dennis Blair, who resigned at the end of last month.

Clapper was the first Director of Defense Intelligence within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. He has held several key positions within the U.S. Intelligence Community, most notably as Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency from 1992 to 1995.
