Haiti Earthquake pictures Port-Au-Prince, Jan 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The 7.0-magnitude Haitian earthquake happened around 4.53 p.m. local time on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey, making it the strongest earthquake ever recorded within 200 kilometers. It struck about 10 miles southwest of the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince. The earthquake had a depth of only 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), so there is a greater chance of severe damage. And around 50,000 people were killed in that quake.

The US President Obama has pledged $100 million in U.S. funds to support what he called one of the largest international relief efforts in history. The President is also trying to rope in the former Presidents Bush and Clinton in the rescue efforts. One source mentioned that Obama had a telephonic chat with Bush and Clinton and he also requested both of them to help out in the rescue efforts.

There is still no clarity on the number of people the earthquake has killed and displaced. Some say that the figures are between 45,000 and 50,000. “No one knows with precision, no one can confirm a figure,” Victor Jackson, an assistant national coordinator with Haiti’s Red Cross, told Reuters news service when giving the estimated death toll Thursday. “We also think there are 3 million people affected throughout the country, either injured or homeless.”
