Washington D.C., Apr 30, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Dorothy Height, the pioneer for Civil Rights, passed away a few days back on 20th April at a ripe age of 98. The funeral service was held yesterday at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington D.C. in the presence of a number of eminent political leaders of America. Barack Obama, President of the United States was also there to grace the occasion where he paid his last respects to Dorothy Height.
Revered as one of the most prominent fighters for social justice in the country, it was natural that the funeral service of the great leader would be attended by everybody of the American political arena. President Barack Obama started his speech by offering his condolences to the family of Dorothy Height. He proceeded on to enumerate the history of the campaigner, remembering the several times that she had graced the White House by her presence during his tenure. Barack Obama became emotional while speaking about the hats that Dorothy Height so often wore and for which she was so popular.
Dorothy Height was young and had to work for the cause of furthering civil rights at a time when there was no proper government, at a time when people were not allowed to follow their dreams, at a time when the blacks were subjugated by the whites in America. Being a black herself nobody could feel the pain of the discrimination better than Dorothy Height. Barack Obama was always in awe of “godmother” as he referred to her, he could not stop his tears even though he was on national television.
