JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) – A powerful earthquake struck far below the Celebes Sea on Thursday morning, according to seismologists.

The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude between 6.1 and 6.9, struck about 184 miles southeast of Jolo on the southwestern Philippines’ Sulu Archipelago islands chain. It happened around 5.41 a.m. local time (21.41 UTC Wednesday).

The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 369 miles (595 kilometers) deep, making it an extremely deep earthquake. Because of the depth, the earthquake had no tsunami potential and, even if land was nearby, it would most likely not have been felt.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported the earthquake as a 6.9-magnitude, while the Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi Dan Geofisika (BMG) put the magnitude at a much weaker 6.1-magnitude. The United States Geological Survey had a 6.7-magnitude.
