Chicago, Oct 21 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Jose Mestre, 54 years old will now be walking 5 kg lighter after surgeons in a Chicago hospital spent three months to remove a huge tumor from his face.

The radical surgery completely removed the 5 kg tumor from the Portuguese man’s face. Doctors say if the tumor had not been removed, Jose would have been killed by it because it affected his eating and sleeping.

The tumor which began growing when Jose was just 14 years old also affected his breathing and of course his face. He was often called “the man without a face” for most of the greater part of his life.

Jose and his family will have to wait for at least a year before doctors can tell them whether Jose is recovering from the surgery.

His sister is obviously very happy for her brother. The sister, Edith Abreu told reporters that “Now, he has a new life”.

An obviously relieved Jose could not comment on the procedure because he needs sometime to adjust to his “new” face. However his translator offered some words saying, “He finally has a chance to lead sort of a normal life because before he felt that, even though he never chose to, he was the center of attraction wherever he went”.
