Jan 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Pope Benedict XVI has advised priests to be careful about pre-marital counseling to people who want to get married so that their marital life does not land on rocks later. He said that not everyone is suitable for matrimony. The Pope said this in his speech to the Vatican tribunal Roman Rota which takes a call on marriage annulments. The procedure of annulment is used for declaring a marriage nonexistent by the church. However, the Pope admitted that aspects leading to annulment of a marriage may not be identified beforehand always. He held that efficient pre-marriage counseling is the best way to reduce the number of failed marriages.
The Pope said that the prerequisite for a church wedding is that both the groom and bride will feel the need to abide by their responsibilities and be truthful to each other. The Pope has also tried to inspire the priests to refrain from giving annulments easily. He maintained last year that the tribunal should strive to make couples stay together and not part ways at a whim. The Pope reminded that priests have a pastoral job of deciding whether a couple is fit for entering into matrimony.
The Pope said in his speech “The church and society at large place too much importance on the good of marriage and the family founded on it to not make a profound commitment to it pastorally”. He also came down heavily on Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi for his philandering ways that are attracting media attention earlier.
