Plane wreckage found near Sand Point, AK

KODIAK, ALASKA (BNO NEWS) – Coast Guard crews on Friday found the wreckage of a small plane after responding to reports of a crash at Sand Point on the Alaska Peninsula.

Sand Point Fire Department rescue responders and good Samaritans report debris in the water on scene, but no people have been sighted.

The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast requesting the assistance of any mariners in the area and launched a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter as well as a HC-130 airplane and crew from Air Station Kodiak.

Arriving on scene, the HC-130 crew began a search for survivors. The helicopter crew arrived about one hour later. Both crews continued to search for any survivors of the crash.

The aircraft is reportedly a Beechcraft 1900 with two people onboard. The cause and circumstances regarding the crash were unknown.

The Beechcraft 1900 is a 19-passenger, pressurized twin-engine turboprop airplane manufactured by the Beechcraft Division of the Raytheon Company.
