Pizzas in Naples being baked using wood from stolen coffins?
May 19th, 2010 - 1:49 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattNaples, May 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) This news is sure going to leave a bad taste in the mouth. There are reports that restaurants are using wood from stolen coffins to bake their pizzas in Naples. It ought to be mentioned that Naples is famous from its mouth-watering pizzas that are made in stoves, which use wood. This imparts a special flavor to the pizza, unlike those made in conventional electrical ovens.
However there are reports that some owners of the cafes and restaurants are relying on coffin-thieves to supply them with wood to light up their stoves. In fact there is a gang of coffin thieves who dig up the coffins in the local cemetery and then sell off the wood. Apart from the pizza, there are speculations that even bread might have had been baked using the wood from the coffins.
The Daily Paper ‘Il Giornale’ said that, “A real suspicion hangs over pizza, one of the few remaining important symbols of the city, that it could be cooked with wood coffins. Not only the pizza, the bread, too, may have been cooked with the wood.” “It’s no wonder these things are happening given the state of the cemeteries. There are graves uncovered, thefts and vandalism,” according to Andrea Santoro, who is the president of the city’s cemetery commission.
