Brasilia, Feb 21 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A group of bathers were attacked by piranhas in South Brazil. Reports say about 20 of the victims had various wounds on parts of their bodies after the attack which has been blamed on fight for habitat.

Piranhas were initially “demonized” by Hollywood but it seems the carnivorous creatures are currently living up to that image. There have been several recent reports of the fishes attacking humans and this certainly is the latest incident.

The report quoted lifeguards as saying that the incident took place in a river last Sunday. The report said hundreds of revelers were bathing in the river in Toropi when the school of piranhas attacked them.

The increased piranha attacks around the world have shocked many experts but environmentalists are worried that the creatures are getting closer to man because of decrease in food sources at their natural habitat. As the creatures hunt for food in shallow waters, marine expects fear that contact with humans will continue to be inevitable.

About 20 people reported have cuts at various parts of their bodies after the attack. All the victims were given treatment at the scene. None of the injuries was considered life threatening.
