Phrea Vihear registered as World Heritage site to CambodiaJuly 8th, 2008 - 1:54 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
Foreign News Sources reported this morning that the UNESCO World Heritage Committee currently meeting in Quebec, Canada has seen fit to register the Phrea Vihear National Park as a World Heritage Site of Cambodia along with the city of Malacca and Penang of Malaysia and an ancient agricultural site in Papua New Guinea. The decision was met with much celebration in the surrounding area of the site in Cambodia.
The World Heritage Committee’s 21 member panel gave a majority vote to allow for the registration after 1 out of 3 stipulations were met. Nonetheless, it was mentioned that the registration has only been to the actual Phrea Vihear structure and not to the land surrounding it, thus allaying disputes about Thailand’s lost of territory. The registration coincides with an earlier joint agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.
