Phoenix, AZ “Professional” bank robber sentenced to prison
February 24th, 2010 - 4:07 am ICT by BNO NewsPHOENIX, ARIZONA (BNO NEWS) – A Phoenix, Arizona man was sentenced to ten years in federal prison for committing three bank robberies in 2009, prosecutors announced on Tuesday.
Ashley Townsend, 54, was arrested after a witness called 911. Townsend committed three bank robberies from March to May 2009. He had a prior felony conviction for bank robbery in 1996.
He approached bank tellers smiling and handing notes demanding money and bragging “I am a professional” in each note.
In his final robbery, a customer of a grocery store witnessed as Townsend robbed the bank and escaped on foot. The witness got into his car and followed him to his apartment and dialed 911. Agents arrived to the residence and secure the money and the defendant.
