Philadelphia, April 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Some parents in Philadelphia are disgusted that their 11-year-old children are going to be given condoms in a campaign against sexually transmitted diseases. The city officials say the campaign is meant to stop the spread of STDs in the city.

Philadelphia’s Department of Health launched the new campaign aimed at fighting the spread of STDs including HIV/AIDS, gonorrhea, syphilis and Chlamydia. The department’s website offer young girls who visit playful interactive instructions on how the female condom is used. The website then encourages young girls between the ages of 11 and 19 years to order their free condoms online to be delivered in the mail.

The campaign was launched on the 7th of April by Mayor Michael Nutter. Young girls who are not shy are also encouraged to walk into some sites in the city to pick their free condoms. The city has one of the highest rates of STD in the United States.

Though parents accept that something should be done about the high rate of sexually transmitted diseases, some parents say it is irresponsible for parents to issue out condoms to children as young as 11 without their consents. They argue that abstinence should be preached rather than the use of condoms.
