Washington DC, Aug 20 (THAINDIAN NEWS) US President Obama is believed to be a Muslim by almost one out of every five Americans, according to a new religion poll.

The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life conducted the poll. They observed that 18 percent of the people sampled for the study mistakenly thought Obama wasn’t a Christian but instead a Muslim. From March 2009 to date, only 34 percent of Americans were aware that the President is a Christian, which is a decline from the 48 percent who were aware of that previously. And the most astonishing thing is that 43 percent of Americans now claim that they have no idea of what the President’s religion actually is.

The study was conducted between July 21 and August 5, which was way before the President chipped in his approval of plans to build a mosque and Islamic centre near the site where the World Trade Centre previously stood, before it was razed down when terrorists attacked it on September 11, 2001.

The White House spokesperson - Bill Burton said the President was a 100 percent Christian and he also prays daily. He said even though the president was proud of his faith, he doesn’t have to convince Americans that he was indeed a committed Christian, as that is not part of his duties as the US president.
