No matter what spelling people use, the Haiti or the misspelled ‘Hatia’ earthquake is devastating to say, in the least. As around 45,000 to 50,000 are feared killed in the 7.0-magnitude earthquake, which happened on Tuesday. The earthquake had a depth of only 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), so there is a greater chance of severe damage.
Relief workers, rescue volunteers and aid is pouring from all over the world to help in the rehabilitation and the rescue efforts. The US President Obama has pledged $100 million in U.S. funds to support what he called one of the largest international relief efforts in history. One source mentioned that Obama had a telephonic chat with Bush and Clinton and he also requested both of them to help out in the rescue efforts.
UK Firefighters have also volunteered to go to Haiti to search for the earthquake survivors there. The team is composed of around 61 firefighters, lead by Greater Manchester firefighter Peter Stevenson. The firefighters have volunteered for the operation and they are also taking some specialist equipment and 2 search dogs as well who will aid in the rescue mission.
