Washington DC, Dec 7 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The attack on Pearl Harbor happened 68 years ago, on 7th December, 1941. The US had developed a naval base and headquarters there after 1898 to increase U.S.’s naval power in the Pacific. The dispute of this power by Japan eventually contributed to the start of war between the United States and Japan. And this war was started by Japan on Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 7, 1941.
Aircraft and midget submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy began an unprecedented attack on the U.S. The Americans were aware of the attack as they had already deciphered Japan’s code earlier but what they didn’t know about this planned attack was the target of the attack. They were totally clueless about the attack and were caught unaware on Pearl Harbor.
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, was commanding the Pearl Harbor attack. The Japanese hit American ships and military installations at 07:51. The first wave attacked military airfields of Ford Island. At 08:30, a second wave of 170 Japanese planes, mostly torpedo bombers, attacked the fleet anchored in Pearl Harbor and caused extensive damage to the US Navy in terms of casualties and in terms of their impressive fleet too.
In remembrance of the lives lost on this day, the Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has asked people across Michigan to lower U.S. flags to half-staff.
