Thomas Maresco Sep 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to the United States Embassy in Lesotho, Africa, a US Peace Corps volunteer was shot and killed in the area during what is believed to be an attempted robbery attempt.

Twenty four year old Thomas “Tommy” Maresco joined the Peace Corp in Africa, hoping to make the world just a little bit better, but was killed in a useless and violent act on Friday, September 10, 2010. The director of the Peace Corps stated that his death was the result of a robbery gone wrong.

Tommy graduated from the University of Florida in 2008, and then decide to volunteer to be a science teacher and sports coach for the Peace Corps. His family saw him as so much more, a friend, a son, a talented musician, an aspiring doctor, and their hero.

Tommy’s uncle, Keith Serrago shared a conversation he had with his nephew just before he joined the Peace Corps. “I asked him and I looked him in the eye and I said, ‘Tommy is this what you really want to do?’ And he said, ‘If I don’t do it Uncle Keith I will regret it all my life,’” Serrago said.

Serrago went on to call his nephew’s death “so senseless and useless” and stated, “Ignorance, which is all over the world. That’s why Tommy went there, to educate,” he exclaimed, adding, “Every now and then you get that special kid and we had one. This family will never be the same and I don’t know how my sister and Tommy, my brother-in-law is going to survive this.”

His name has not yet been added to the “Fallen Peace Corps Volunteers Memorial Project” page here .
