Patti Smith wins the national book award for 2010

New York, Nov 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The National Book ward came off last night and the surprise of the night was that the fiction award was won by a previously unknown author. Among the winners on the night was Patti Smith.

Patti’s memoir, Just Kids was awarded on the night. It won honored in the non-fiction category and the book talk about the youthful days of Patti. The bitter-sweet book concentrates on the relationship that existed between herself and the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The book talked about how the pair became flat mates and later lovers. The book also chronicles the events that led to the separation of the two. The two however remains best of friends.

The huge talking point of the night was the winner of the fiction category. The top prize for that category was won by Jaimy Gordon with his book, Lord of Misrule. The book beat off challenges from renowned authors like Nicole Krauss and Lionel Shriver to win the top prize in fiction. The two were tipped to win the top prize in fiction with their books Great House and So Much For That respectively.

However the comedy from Gordon managed to win the award and take the $10,000 prize money that comes with it.
