November 14th, 2011 - 10:08 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Nov 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) UK pet insures are losing huge sums due to fraudulent claims. The officials say some pet owners are even killing their own animals just to make the claim for the premium.
It is estimated that the fraudulent pet insurance claims have almost gone up four times in the last year. From the numbers detected, officials say the cases are only set to go up.
In 2009, there were £420,000 worth of pet insurance frauds which were detected in Britain. However in 2010, about £1,929,900 of pet insurance fraud cases were detected in the country. Officials believe there are several other cases in the country which go undetected.
In Britain, insurance companies accept insurance on almost any type of pest. In 2010, about 2.3 million domestic cats and dogs were insured in the country. The insurers say they plan to use shared database to be able to detect fraudulent pet insurance claims.
The Association of British Insurers say there are several forms of frauds that exist in the system. The common ones are owners getting rid of their pets and claiming the premium. The insurers say in some other cases, the claimants have been found not to have the animal at all in the first place.
