Over 500 people queue up for 20 jobs at Poundland
October 18th, 2011 - 10:49 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Oct 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Jobs are hard to come by so no one seems to be blaming the 500 people who queued up at Poundland to compete for 20 advertised positions. The bargain shop announced that they received a total of about 25 applications for each of the sales assistant positions that they advertized recently.
Though the position is considered low-level, the company said two graduates brought in their applications to have the job. Analysts say the desperation shows how jobs are hard to come by in the United Kingdom. The country is one of the worst hit in the recent global economic crisis.
It is estimated that the country’s unemployment rate hit a 17-year high last week. Officially, 2.5 million people in the country are out of job and that is the highest number in recent times.
The UK government assures that it is in control of the situation. A spokesperson of the UK Department for Work and Pensions said about 10,000 jobs are added to the economy each day. The spokesperson assured that the government is “committed to support the economy and encourage businesses to invest and create jobs.”
The opposition party however disagrees saying the country’s unemployment is rather getting worse by the day.
