wall August 4, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Owners who neglect their property in Pennsylvania are in for a unique punishment. They will have their names put up online for all to see. The Mayor of Reading, Tom McMahon made the announcement about putting up a specific ‘Wall of Shame’ for such property owners.

The online post will feature the property along with the name, address and photograph of the owner. The Mayor made this statement on Monday after concluding the touring of a property. He said that it will be the city’s way of drawing attention to the negligent property owners who have brought shame to the city.

He shared information about the scarred properties of the city. The city contains 60 such properties now of which 10 have been formally named as ‘blighted’. He further added that this was a step towards making the owners see reason and carrying out the repairs as soon as possible. The city will take necessary action which may mean pulling down the property in the eventuality of the owner failing to do the needful, he concluded.

McMahon said that the owners who have been marked as the chief reason for marring the city and its neighborhoods by derelict buildings will not be left alone. “You can run but you cannot hide,” said the Mayor. The entire world will soon to get to identify you and the residents of the city will be after you before long. He stated.

Mc Mohan also stated that he will be serving notices to the owners who remain inactive or ignore the message.
