WAKEFIELD, VIRGINIA (BNO NEWS) — A pilot was killed on Friday when a small plane crashed on approach to a regional airport in southeastern Virginia, federal officials said.

The crash happened just after 3 p.m. local time when the experimental aircraft went down on its final approach to runway 20 at Wakefield Municipal Airport in Sussex County.

Arlene Salac, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), said one person was on board the aircraft when it went down for unknown reasons. Salac said the pilot had been killed in the crash.

As the tail number of the aircraft was not immediately known, it is not yet clear who owned the plane.
