Oregon, Feb 2 (THAINDIAN NEWS) About 3,500 human remains are left at the mental hospital where the film “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was filmed.

The bodies have been left for so long that the room where it is kept has been labeled “room of forgotten souls.” Some of the remains have been in the storage for more than 60 years.

The Oregon State Hospital still has the remains of inmates that died there between 1914 and the 1970’s. The hospital officials have put up an online list and they are hoping that living relatives will eventually get to know about their relatives and come for them for proper burial.

Already, the move is paying dividends because 120 people have come forward to claim the bodies of their relatives. One such person is Don Whetsell who managed to secure the remains of his grandmother after 60 years. Whetsell buried his grandmother recently and said he is relieved he has done that.

He said “I just felt that I couldn’t rest. I knew my grandmother for years and loved her dearly. It made me feel good; I know she would’ve been pleased.”

Most of the inmates who died at the hospital were abandoned by their relatives when they were taken to the facility.
