October 9th, 2009 - 1:55 pm ICT by BNO NewsSKAGIT COUNTY, WASHINGTON (BNO NEWS) – A small plane crashed at a regional airport in Washington on Thursday afternoon, officials said.
The plane took off from Skagit Regional Airport in Burlington, seconds before it crashed at 1.05 p.m. local time. “The pilot was fatally injured,” said Allen Kenitzer, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Kenitzer said the crash happened during take-off. “The aircraft went up and then straight down into the ground,” he said.
The aircraft was a Piper PA-12 which is capable of carrying one pilot and two passengers, but only one person was on board. FAA records showed that the plane was registered to Bruce L. Heiner from Bow, Washington, but it was not immediately clear if he was the fatality.
No one on the ground was reported injured.
