On Donuts Day Americans Gorge On The Free Snacks

June 5, (THAINDIAN NEWS) America celebrated the age old custom of Donut Day with retailers handing out free donuts with beverages and even free.
The sweet-toothed had the time of their lives as giants like Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Fractured Prune and Lamar Donuts participating in the celebrations. Americans scrambled the web for the list of participating stores to avail their free donuts.
Dunkin Donuts marked the day by giving out free donuts with every beverage purchase. Krispy Kreme was one step ahead by giving out donuts for free at all the participating outlets of the company. Fractured Prune followed the Dunkin Donuts’ policy of giving out the American sweet snack with the purchase of a beverage.
Lamar Donuts on the other hand gave out the Ray’s original glazed donuts absolutely free of cost without the need for any purchase. Donut Connection showed a more convenient option to the Americans by providing coupons on their website that gave away free donuts with the purchase of a jumbo coffee.
American families traced out the participating stores and availed the free snack in incredible quantities.
The history behind the National Donut Day dates to 1938 when women served donuts to the soldiers serving in World War II. The women called themselves the ‘Salvation Army Lassies’ and were the only people allowed to go to the front lines of the war apart from the army personnel. Lt. Col. Helen Purviance is considered the first donut girl.
It might have been a nightmare for the calorie conscious but it surely was a perfect celebration of the American Spirit through its staple snack.
