Olympic spectators treated to Cathedral of Sewage
August 13th, 2012 - 11:37 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Aug 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Greenway, is a renovated pathway was where the Olympic fans were after watching Usain Bolt sprint to glory and also Michael Phelps take his record breaking bow left the main venue through. To reach there, the fans need to pass an unusual building behind high barbed wire that let alone the Hungarian, Japanese and American tourists do not know what it is but so do Londoners.
That building is the Abbey Mills Pumping station. It was built in 1868 to remove the smell of sewage that has not been processed in the Thames and is still dealing with the biggest overflow in London. Some Londoners may recognize it as the Arkham Asylum used on the 2005 film ‘Batman begins’.”
The cathedral of sewage or the temple of sewage” as it has been dubbed, has been designed in a cruciform plan and heralded as a marvel of Victorian engineering is proving to be an unsorted puzzle to the Olympic visitors since one Olympic spectator said that she had no idea what the building was but had a ‘faint smell’.
