Ohio Teacher Accused of Sleeping on Job Fired
November 13th, 2010 - 2:42 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonNov 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A sevety-two year old long time teacher has been fired by the schoolboard at Perkins Local Schools in Northwest Ohio after they voted to remove her from duty because she had reportedly been falling asleep at her desk.
Carol Smith, 72 was accused of having “totally unprofessional” conduct, after students reported that the class was often unruly and that they played computer games as she slept. A report which was given last month by referee Harry Taich, Ms. Smith was also said to be threatening the safety of the school kids, both middle and high school aged, when she slept during class.
“Leaving middle school and high school children unattended without adult supervision is an accident waiting to happen,” Taich stated.
The thirty-four teacher had been suspended with no pay ever since April, when allegations arose that she had spoken of pornographic magazines with her students. During that investigation, students reported her for coming in later, and falling asleep at her desk. She was cleared of the charges of speaking on porn, but the board still managed to find reasons to fire her.
Ms Smith maintains that she did not sleep during class, but admits to falling asleep once as she was supervising an in-school suspension session.
