May 26, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): US President Barack Obama will be sending up to 1,200 National Guard troops for the safety of the U.S.-Mexico border. This pronouncement arrives after a month since Arizona ratified the divisive immigration law that ignited a national debate.

The resolution of Obama was known after the President’s conference with Republican Senators to thrash out the immigration legislation, which is a deal that could be complicated to enact this year without Republican endorsement. He is, therefore, attempting to achieve the support of Republicans for a refurbishment of American immigration laws.

He will also be requesting $500 million for border defense and law enforcement.

America’s Voice is a group that backs tighter borders as well as a way for unlawful immigrants to acquire US citizenship. Frank Sharry of America’s Voice said that Obama has seemingly given in to Republican chiefs without assurance on all-inclusive immigration legislation.

James Jones, Obama’s national security advisor, in a letter to Senate Armed Services Chairman, Carl Levin, stated that the troops will be a link to longer-term enhancements on the border. He added that the troops will assist intelligence operations and surveillance until the border agency can enlist and school more officers and agents.

Organizations like NumbersUSA that desire to diminish legal and illegal immigration were somewhat satisfied by Obama’s decision but called the action a token response and politically provoked.
