Port-au-Prince, Oct 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A senior U.N. Official has told Reuters that he expects the cholera outbreak in Haiti to widen. The outbreak has already claimed the lives of some 250 Haitians.

Though the death toll has been kept low by the swift response of humanitarian workers, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, Nigel Fisher believes that the world must brace itself for a “serious epidemic”.

Some 3,000 Haitians were affected with the outbreak in the country. A devastating earthquake ravaged the country in January and this is the second crisis to hit the country in less than a year.

It is feared that the outbreak could be made worse by the poor environmental conditions that the earthquake left in the country.

The United Nations hopes this fear does not come to pass and as a measure, the UN has set up treatment centers in remote locations to isolate the patients from the other settlers. The worse hit areas of the outbreak are Artibonite and Center.

There have been reported cases in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince.

Haitian health officials say some 253 people have lost their lives as a result of the cholera and a further 3,015 have been hospitalized.
